About This Skill

What it does

The Cofounder Evaluator skill helps founders assess potential co-founders using a structured methodology inspired by Hexa's principles. It facilitates compatibility assessment through analysis of skills, values alignment, and equity frameworks to improve the likelihood of startup success. The tool provides insights into whether a partnership is beneficial or if proceeding solo would be more appropriate.

When to use it

  • You’re deciding whether to work with a potential co-founder.
  • You need help determining co-founder fit and compatibility.
  • You're unsure about how to fairly split equity between founders.
  • You are considering the pros and cons of working solo versus partnering.
  • You have concerns about potential conflicts or disagreements with a prospective co-founder.

Key capabilities

  • Skills Complement Analysis: Evaluates the skills each founder brings to the table.
  • Vision Alignment Assessment: Identifies alignment on long-term goals (e.g., company size, exit strategy).
  • Values Alignment Evaluation: Assesses shared values and beliefs.
  • Working Style Compatibility Check: Examines how founders collaborate daily.
  • Equity Split Guidance: Provides recommendations for equitable equity distribution based on contribution levels and commitment.
  • Founder Archetype Matching: Suggests ideal pairings between founder types (e.g., Builder, Seller, Operator).
  • Trial Period Framework: Outlines a structured trial period with suggested phases (coffee chats, mini-project, full immersion) to assess compatibility.

Example prompts

  • "Assess my potential co-founder's skills and values against mine."
  • "What equity split would be appropriate for me and my co-founder, given that I’m contributing the idea and domain expertise?"
  • "Should I pursue a partnership with someone who has different long-term goals for the company than I do?"

Tips & gotchas

  • The tool uses a rating scale of 1-5 to assess skills (Technical, Sales, Marketing, etc.). Ideally, there should be no overlaps above 4 and no gaps below 2.
  • Pay close attention to "Red Flags" like history of disputes or differing commitment levels.
  • Consider the "7-10 Year Question": Would you enjoy working closely with this person under stressful conditions for an extended period?
