About This Skill
What it does
This skill assists writers in creating realistic and believable settlements for their stories or worldbuilding projects. It leverages ten core principles of urban development to generate layouts that feel organically grown rather than artificially designed. The tool considers factors like geography, resource availability, defense needs, cultural expression, and historical events to produce detailed settlement designs.
When to use it
- Developing a realistic medieval town for a fantasy novel.
- Creating the backdrop for a historical fiction story set in an ancient city.
- Designing a believable frontier settlement for a Western or post-apocalyptic narrative.
- Generating unique and culturally rich urban environments for worldbuilding projects.
- Establishing the layout of a village impacted by natural disasters.
Key capabilities
- Site Selection: Considers factors like water access, defensive position, resource proximity, trade routes, climate suitability, and spiritual significance.
- Morphological Design: Allows for control over street patterns (grid, radial, organic), density gradients, boundary definition, building typology, open space distribution, and vertical development.
- Functional Planning: Incorporates economic base, defense systems, civic organization, social infrastructure, religious facilities, and knowledge centers.
- Infrastructure Development: Accounts for water management, transportation networks, food storage/distribution, energy systems, and waste management.
- Adherence to Urban Development Principles: Applies ten core principles including Geographic Determinism, Functional Necessity, Network Emergence, Layered Development, Power Projection, Resource Constraint, Cultural Expression, Adaptive Reuse, Disaster Response, and Spatial Stratification.
Example prompts
- "Describe a settlement built near a river with access to iron ore, prioritizing defensive position."
- "Generate a town layout using an organic street pattern, emphasizing religious facilities and markets."
- "Design a coastal village that has adapted after a major flood event, considering resource constraints."
Tips & gotchas
- The skill focuses on generating realistic layouts based on established principles; it does not create detailed architectural designs.
- Consider the interplay of parameters – for example, climate suitability will influence building typology and street patterns.
- Specificity in prompts yields more targeted results.
